Natural nuts are unroasted nuts. Natural nuts are delicious in a stir-fry, in recipes and in muesli. However, natural nuts are chewier than roasted nuts. For that reason, roasted nuts are often (though not always) considered tastier.
The Brazil nuts come from Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. The tree grows mainly along the banks of the Amazon, Rio Negro, Rio Vaupés and the Orinoco, in places that are not flooded, at an average annual temperature of 28 °C.
The Brazil nut comes from a tree (Bertholletia excelsa) of the Lecythidaceae family. It is one of the largest trees in the rainforest, reaching a height of up to 50 metres, a crown spread of 25 to 35 m and a trunk 1 to 2 m thick. Some trees live for more than 500 years. It takes 10 to 25 years before a tree bears fruit. After pollination has taken place, it takes another 14 months before the fruit of the Brazil nut has ripened and falls from the tree.
