All about mulberries

Mulberries can rightly be called a superfood. They are one of the few fruits with a considerable protein content and they are an excellent source of iron, calcium, vitamin C and fibre. They are also low in sodium and fat-free. Mulberries contain naturally occurring sugars. In addition, mulberries contain a high concentration of resveratrol, an antioxidant that has a positive effect on the metabolism and on the heart and blood vessels.

The white mulberry tree originally comes from China, where it was cultivated for the rearing of silkworms, which eagerly feast on the leaves of the tree.

Mulberries come from the mulberry tree. The tree grows 8 to 10 metres tall and can only be used for silk production after 10 years. The fruits are white, later yellow, but often also pink to purple, and edible. Because they do not keep for long, they are offered in dried form. Mulberry plants are held in high regard in various traditional forms of medicine.
