All about roasted macadamia nuts

Of all nuts, macadamias contain the highest level of unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats lower the cholesterol level in the blood and can therefore help prevent cardiovascular disease. The fatty acid content of macadamias is equal to that of olive oil. For more information, please see the Nutrition Guide.

Macadamias should be packaged dry, preferably vacuum-sealed. Both raw and roasted, the nuts keep for a long time.

In 1857, the philosopher Dr. John Macadam discovered the tree in the rainforest on the east coast of Australia. Hawaii later took up production as well. Afterwards more producers followed, including: Kenya, Malawi, Guatemala and Costa Rica.

The macadamia grows in clusters on a tree that can reach 5 metres in height. The tree bears its first fruits after about 5 years. It takes around 10 years before the tree reaches peak production.

Macadamias are enclosed in a thick green husk. When the fruit is ripe, the green husk splits open. The nuts are then gathered and freed from the husk, after which the skin is removed. Once the nut has been roasted in the shop, it is a true delicacy among nuts.
