All about pitted prunes

Prunes actually belong to the so-called Super Fruits. Prunes are super rich in antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, flavonoids and glutathione. They contain little glucose. Soaking them briefly makes them deliciously soft and they have a laxative effect.

Dried prunes are best kept in the refrigerator. They will then keep for at least three months.

Prunes originally come from France. Nowadays America accounts for 70% to 80% of world production. Chile and Argentina also have a large share in the prune market. Our prunes come from the USA, France or Chile.

The plum is a tree fruit that grows on the plum tree, which reaches a height of three to seven metres. A ripe plum has a juicy and sweet taste. The fruit is egg-shaped with a pit in the middle.

After harvesting, the plums are first washed and dried in drying tunnels for about 24 hours at various temperatures. After drying they are sorted by size, using the English pound (454 grams) as the basis. Prunes are traded both with and without the pit.
