All about sunflower seeds

A sunflower seed is the seed of the sunflower. Harvesting sunflower seeds is very simple. A single sunflower seed can grow into a flower that in turn produces hundreds of sunflower seeds. These seeds form in the heart of the flower and can be removed from it without much effort.

The seeds have been harvested for thousands of years, originally in Mexico and Peru. Native Americans have been using them for more than 5,000 years. The Spanish conquistadors brought sunflower seeds to Europe.

Sunflower seeds are edible, have a robust flavour and are rich in fibre and unsaturated fatty acids. They also contain many vitamins such as E, B, B6 and B11, as well as extremely healthy minerals such as manganese, copper, phosphorus, magnesium and selenium.
